NCJW supports Adeel A. Mangi. Here’s why:

Adeel A. Mangi is a preeminent lawyer who has secured landmark legal victories throughout his career. As a partner at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP, Mr. Mangi has also devoted thousands of hours to pro bono service, filing numerous amicus briefs in the federal appellate courts and before the US Supreme Court on behalf of interfaith groups, and, among his many other legal accomplishments, successfully fought on behalf of Muslim communities seeking to build and open mosques in two New Jersey towns. He has been a lifelong advocate for the Muslim community, serving on the Board of Directors for Muslims for Progressive Values and for six terms on the Board of the Muslim Bar Association of New York. If confirmed, Mr. Mangi would be the first Muslim American to serve as a federal appellate court judge.  

Adeel A. Mangi’s stance on important issues:

Civil Rights

Mr. Mangi has filed a series of amicus briefs on behalf of interfaith groups seeking to block a travel ban aimed at Muslim-majority countries, diversion of federal funds to a build a wall on the southern border, and repeal the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Racial Justice

His 2020 case involving the death of a mentally ill African-American inmate who was alleged to have been killed by white prison guards in a retaliatory beating resulted in a landmark settlement and the requirement that New York install a comprehensive network of video recording cameras and microphones throughout the Sullivan Correctional Facility.

Religious Freedom

In 2017, Mr. Mangi represented two different Muslim communities that were denied permission to build new mosques in two New Jersey towns. Mr. Mangi secured a settlement under which both mosques were approved and the respective municipalities paid significant compensation to the Muslim communities affected. He donated legal fees awarded to him to several charities, including a scholarship fund for Muslim law students.

Upon Mr. Mangi’s nomination, Senator Cory Booker shared, “Having come to know Adeel Mangi over the years as a fixture in the New Jersey legal community, I have seen firsthand that he is a person of integrity and deep conviction with an unflinching commitment to fairness and equality.”

Experience (and Pro Bono Work):

Mr. Mangi is a partner at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP. He began his career at the firm out of law school as an associate, and has since worked his way up to counsel and now partner. As a litigator, he represents an array of clients in high cases on complex commercial issues, specializing in false advertising and pharmaceutical industry litigation. Mr. Mangi also leads the firm’s pro bono practice, filing countless amicus briefs on a variety of civil rights issues, including religious freedom and the rights of prisoners, in the federal appellate courts and US Supreme Court. 

Education:

Mr. Mangi received his LL.M. from Harvard Law School in 2000, where he attended as a Kennedy Memorial Scholar. He attended Lincoln’s Inn and the Inns of Court School of Law in London and qualified as a British Barrister at Law in 1999. Mr. Mangi also holds a First Class Degree in Law from the University of Oxford (Pembroke College), where he held the Roger Bannister Scholarship for Academics and Sports and Domus scholarships. 

Awards:

His awards are numerous and of the many, Mr. Mangi was named a 2023 National Law Journal General Litigation Trailblazer, as well as selected for Benchmark Litigation’s 2024 and 2023 “Top 100 Trial Lawyers,” an exclusive list of the top trial lawyers in the United States. Benchmark Litigation also recognized Mr. Mangi with their 2023 “Impact Case of the Year” award. In 2017 he was awarded Pro Bono Attorney of the Year by the South Asian Bar Association of New York. His firm received five awards between 2017-2019 based upon his pioneering work.

Professional Affiliations:

Mr. Mangi is on the Advisory Boards of the Alliance of Families for Justice and the Center for Security, Race and Rights. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Legal Aid Society of New York, Muslims for Progressive Values, Muslim Bar Association of New York, and as an ally Board Member for the National LGBT Bar Association.
